A Handball game in France (mid-fourteenth century from indoor to an outdoor type of game)
-Outdoor version moved to England where a crude racquet was first introduced (1550)
-Mainly played among the wealthy
2. A game called “Racquets” in England
-Began in the slums of England and moved to private sport clubs
-similar game to that of today’s squash

In the 1860’s changes progressed and the game became “lawn tennis” on grass surface
-In 1863, W.E. Wingfield used old and new ideas to develop the game which he called “Sphairistike” and it was an immediate success. Changed name to “lawn tennis” in 1864.

Old & New Ideas:
Old -concept came from lawn tennis
-net from badminton
-scoring from “racquets”
-ball came from “fives” a game similar to “racquets”
New -an hour glass shaped court
-published pamphlet of rules and necessary equipment

1874: Tennis was first introduced in North America

1875-1877: The rectangular court was adopted along with other minor rule changes. In 1877 the first lawn tennis championships were held at Wimbledon.

Etiquette:
Call opponents shots (in or out). If you have a question on a call an opponent made, say, “are you sure?” If this happens a few times, feel free to call a line judge over.

If ball is out, don’t hit it and then call it out….call it out as soon as you see it bounce out of bounds—it’s best not to touch it with your racket. (same goes for serves). Only call a ball out if you see a space between the ball and the line.

Loud conversation or distracting behavior at court side during play is not permitted. Be quiet when at a tennis match—you can encourage people, but it’s not a place to be screaming for people.

Don’t walk behind someone who is playing—wait until the point is finished to cross behind someone and let them know you are there.

Shake hands with opponents and officials after a game/match.
Wait until there is a break in the action before running onto another’s court to retrieve a ball
Promptly return a ball that has rolled onto your court
Avoid criticism of opponents and officials

Common Tennis Terms
Ace: A legal serve that the receiver is unable to touch
Backswing: The wind up of a stroke before the racquet and ball make contact
Backspin: The downward motion of the racquet as it is applied to the ball
Crosscourt: A stroke hit to the opposite side of the center line from where it is played.
Drive: A shot hit with a full stroke after the bounce. (forehand or backhand)
Follow-through: The motion of the arm and racquet after the ball has been contacted
Let: A ball that touches the net on a serve but lands in the proper service area. The serve is taken over. A let also occurs when outside interference requires the replaying of a point
Lob: Any ball that is lofted high into the air, usually over the opponent’s head into the deep court Topspin: The forward rotation of the ball after it has been contacted by the racquet
“In”: Hitting the line = in
All: A tie score
Ad-out: When the receiver gets the point after deuce
Ad-in: When the serves gets the point after deuce
Stroke: The manner in which a player hits the ball
Deuce: A tie score at 40-40
Doubles: A match between 4 players
Singles: A match between 2 players

Rules:
Start of Game: Spin your racket—choose a “heads” side and a “tails” side (look at the end of your racket handle.

Winner of the racket spin can choose one of the following: which side s/he wants to receive the serve on or if s/he wants to serve first.

The server begins serving from the right side of the center mark and serves to the right box of the receiver. The server switches which side of the center mark they serve from with each point.
For each serve, the server has 2 attempts to make a successful serve in the correct box. If the ball does not go into the correct box, it is called a fault. If the ball hits the net on the way over and bounces in the correct service box, it is called a “let” and does not count as one of the attempts. However, the serve is taken over.
The receiver can stand anywhere on the opposite court, but must let the ball bounce one time before hitting it.
A ball that is hit in-bounds or on a boundary line (any part of the ball hits the line) is considered to be “in” and should be played.
On a serve—your feet may not cross over the baseline until after your racket has contacted the ball. The result would be a foot fault and that would count as 1 of your 2 serves.
Hitting the line = “in”

How do you win points? You can win points if your opponent:

fails in both attempts to serve the ball into the proper court
hits the ball outside the proper boundary lines
hits the ball into the net
lets the ball bounce twice before returning it
reaches over the net to hit a ball before it has bounced
throws the racket and hits the ball
touches the net with the body or racket while the ball is in play
deliberately carries or catches the ball on the racket strings
does anything to hinder the opponent in making a shot
touches the ball with anything other than the racket during a point (clothing, body)
touches or catches the ball during a point, even if standing outside the court

Scoring
Four Points in a Game: 15, 30, 40, Game. At 40-40 (or deuce), the next point is called add-in, if the server wins the point. Add-out, if the receiver wins the point.
The next point won after someone’s “add” would either be “game” or “deuce”. Deuce, add-in, deuce, add-out can go on indefinitely until someone wins by a margin of two or more points.

What?? Still don’t understand the scoring? See below:
The server’s score is always given first. The points are: love (0), 15 (the first point won by either player), 30 (the second point), 40 (the third point), and game (the fourth point). If the players are tied at 3 or more points in a game, the score is deuce. When the server goes ahead by 1 point after the score is deuce, the score is ad in, or advantage server; if the receiver is ahead, it’s ad out. A player must win by 2 consecutive points after the score was deuce in order to win that game. If not, the score goes back to deuce.

A match is best of 3 sets. To win a set, a player has to win 6 games, winning by 2 games. The score for one set may look like this: 6-0, 6-1, 6-2, 6-3, 6-4, 7-5, 8-6.

When the set score reaches 6-6, a tie-break game is played. It’s called the “12 point Tiebreaker.” The first player or team that wins 7 points and is ahead by at least 2 points wins the game and that set. The score is called out as 1, 2, 3, 4 etc, throughout the game. A final tie-break score might be 7-0, 7-1, 7-2, 7-3, 7-4, 7-5, 8-6, 9-7 or so on.
The singles player whose turn it is to serve, serves the first point from the right court. The opponent is the server for the second and third points, serving the second point from the left court and the third point from the right court—players alternate which side they serve from. After that, the players serve alternately for 2 consecutive points until the winner of the game and set has been decided.

Spring Health Class: Journals 1-5

1. You will need one of your parents/guardians to participate with you for this. The purpose of this exercise is to help you work through something you disagree on, or at least to gain a better understanding for the other person’s feelings. Find something that you and your parents/guardians don’t see eye to eye on. Or it could be something that just drives you little nuts about them and them about you. Practice using “I messages” and NOT “You messages.” Be sure to use your active listening skills!

Reminder: Active Listening
1.Ask for more info on how they feel
2.Repeat what you heard them say in your own words
3.Summarize the main ideas and ask the person “is that what I hear you saying?”
4.Acknowledge and show appreciation for the speaker’s feelings

Please answer the following questions yourself AND have your parent/guardian respond to the same questions and sign below. You will be writing down your own answers and your parents answers to the questions!!!!(You may use the back of this paper to answer the questions) (11 points)

1.Was it difficult to understand how the other person feels?
2.Were you able to process the other person’s feelings and put them into your own words so that they were still accurate?
3.Did it take you several times or just once to fully understand where the other person was coming from?
4.Were you able to validate the other person’s feelings?
5. You are responsible to choose a topic and then present your topic creatively and thoroughly. (Use your multiple intelligence to present your topic!) You will be researching about the topic you choose. This project is for you to research current issues and questions that you may have in health and then to present your findings to the class.

Here are some suggestions that you can ask about your topic to get you started—
* Who will this most likely effect?
* What are the issues surrounding this topic? What is it? What causes people to use these/this? What are the effects of this? What do you think about this issue?
* Where is this issue occurring? Only in the US? North America? World?
* When did this issue arise? Past month? Last year?
* Why is this topic an issue today?
* How would you deal with this issue? How would you solve this issue?

You are required to prepare a 4-7 minute presentation for your classmates. You need to have some sort of outline, poster, or a PowerPoint presentation for your classmates to follow along with. Presentations will begin on Current Issues in Health Project

You will be graded on 5 main parts…..
1. Choosing your own topic to research.
2. Handing in a works cited page with at least three sources. (They cannot be all internet sources.)
3. Filling out an Idea Diagram for your project.
4. (At least) one page typed paper of your presentation— Be sure to check grammar and spelling!
5. Your presentation—was it of appropriate length? Did you have a capturing introduction? Was there ample content? Did you have an outline, poster or PowerPoint presentation for a visual?

Due Dates:
Tuesday, Nov 27th in class Project Topic Due 5 points

Friday, Dec 7th in class Works Cited page Due 15 points

Friday, Dec 14th in class Idea Diagram Due 20points

Friday, Dec 21st in class Typed Paper Due 30 points

Starting Tuesday, January 8th in class Presentations 30points

Health Project Total Points: 100

Health Project: Paper

You are to write at least a 1 page typed paper about your topic for your presentation—Be sure to check grammar and spelling!

Health Project: Topics

DUE _______________________ as you come into class:
Health Project Topics

You will have the choice of one of these topics for you project. Your feet should be staggered up and back with your dominant foot back. Hold the shuttle with your forefinger and thumb of your non-dominant hand. Hold your racket arm in a backswing position with your hand and wrist in a cocked position. As you release the shuttle, transfer your weight from your back foot to your front foot. Contact the shuttle around knee height and follow through up and over your opposite shoulder. THIS IS YOUR PRIMARY SERVE FOR SINGLES because the court is deep and narrow—you want your opponent to have to move front to back.
*Short serve—Stand along center line and close to the short service line. You can serve a short serve with both your forehand and backhand. THIS IS YOUR PRIMARY SERVE FOR DOUBLES because the court is wider and not as deep—you want your opponent to have to move side to side. You aim to pass the shuttle through an imaginary 2 ft. window along the top of the net. You contact this serve just above the knee and push, guide, or direct the shuttle into the correct service court

Overhead Strokes
*Forehand—similar to throwing a ball.*Backhand—compared to popping a towel at the ceiling.
Clear: the offensive clear is a flatter, faster clear. The defensive clear has a high and deep trajectory
*Overhead Clear—Used to clear the shuttle when you are farther away from the net. Contact the shuttle as high as possible. Weight should be distributed evenly on both feet. Raise racket high and swing down.
*Underhand Clear—Used to clear the shuttle when you are closer to the net. Contact the shuttle as high as possible. Weight should be slightly on front foot. Drop racket down and swing up
*Backhand Clear—If you are hitting a backhand clear, you should turn your shoulders and pivot at your waist to get sideways to the net. As the shuttle drops, swing your racket upward with your elbow leading. Contact the shuttle in front of your body and as high as possible with the racket finishing in the direction of the shuttle’s trajectory.

Drop Shot: hit low, just over the net, and slow so the birdie drops directly to the ground. Contact the shuttle further in front of your body. THIS IS A DECEPTIVE SHOT. You want to make this shot look like an overhead clear or a smash.
*Forehand Overhead Drop Shot—Act like you’re going to take an overhead clear or smash, but contact the birdie high and out in front of your body. Direct the shot down into your opponent’s court. Do not bend your elbow during execution—this is an important part of deception.
*Backhand Overhead Drop Shot—Forearm is facing the net, racket head is angled down. Contact the shuttle in front of your body and as high as possible. Angle the racket’s face downward, directing the shuttle close to the top of the net.
*Forehand Underhand Drop Shot—Put your wrist in cocked position, drop racket down and lift to contact shuttle as high as possible—lift from your shoulder and bump the shuttle over the net.
*Backhand Underhand Drop Shot—Racket arm up, palm down, racket parallel to floor, weight slightly on front foot. Put your wrist in cocked position, drop racket down and lift to contact shuttle as high as possible—lift from your shoulder and bump the shuttle over the net.

Smash: hit fast, with downward force, and steep, to put away any birdie that has been hit up and is short. It’s meant to look like an overhead clear or an overhead drop shot.
*Forehand Smash—Contact the shuttle high and in front of your body. Your racket must be moving at a rapid pace. Follow through down and across your body, using your non-racket arm to assist in a pulling motion for added speed
*Backhand Smash—Turn your back toward the net, drop your racket head down keeping your forearm parallel with the ground. Lead the motion with your elbow and transfer your weight from your rear foot to your front foot. Rapid body rotation and quick racket speed will provide this hit with power.

Sophomore PE II Field Hockey

Basic Rules
A. This maximum rate is based on the person's age. An estimate of a person's maximum age-related heart rate can be obtained by subtracting the person's age from 220. For example, for a 50-year-old person, the estimated maximum age-related heart rate would be calculated as 220 - 50 years = 170 beats per minute (bpm). The 50% and 70% levels would be:

*50% level: 170 x 0.50 = 85 bpm, and
*70% level: 170 x 0.70 = 119 bpm

Thus, moderate-intensity physical activity for a 50-year-old person will require that the heart rate remains between 85 and 119 bpm during physical activity.
For vigorous-intensity physical activity, a person's target heart rate should be 70 to 85% of his or her maximum heart rate. To calculate this range, follow the same formula as used above, except change "50 and 70%" to "70 and 85%". For example, for a 35-year-old person, the estimated maximum age-related heart rate would be calculated as 220 - 35 years = 185 beats per minute (bpm). The 70% and 85% levels would be:

*70% level: 185 x 0.70 = 130 bpm, and
*85% level: 185 x 0.85 = 157 bpm

Thus, vigorous-intensity physical activity for a 35-year-old person will require that the heart rate remains between 130 and 157 bpm during physical activity.

Target Heart Rate Zone

220- ______________ (your age) = _________________ (maximum heart rate)

________ (maximum heart rate) x 0.50 = __________________ bpm and

________ (maximum heart rate) x 0.85 = __________________ bpm

http://www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/dnpa/physical/measuring/target_heart_rate.htm
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Freshman PE II Volleyball

Basic Rules of Volleyball
*Each team has three hits to attempt to return the ball.
*The volley continues until the ball hits the playing court, goes out of bounds, or a team fails to return it properly.
*When the serving team wins a volley, it wins a point and the right to continue serving.
*During this volley a player may not hit the ball twice in succession. Scoring:
1. Score only when you serve and you’re opponent commits a fault.
2. Faults:
a. A shot is hit out-of-bounds
b. A shot not hit over the net
c. A serve no hit within the proper serving box
d. A player hits the net with his/her body or racket
e. A player hits the shuttle before it crosses the net

Freshman PE 1 Speedball Rules

Start Of Game:
Kick Off
The game starts with a place kick from the center of the kicking team's restraining line. The ball must be kicked to or beyond the receiving team's restraining line unless touched by a player on the receiving team. The player who kicked off may not touch the ball until it has been played by another player after a score, the team that scored shall kick off.

Scoring:
Field Goal 3pts.
A field goal is a ground ball that passes over the end line, between the posts and below the knees. A punt (kicked stationary ball) does not count as a field goal. A ground ball does not include the use of hands.

Touchdown 1pt.
A touchdown is scored by completing a forward pass into the end zone. No part of the receiver's body may touch the lines or ground outside the sidelines or endlines.

Ball Out Of Bounds
Sidelines
Balls crossing the sidelines are put into play by the opposing team by a punt or pass from the spot it went out of bounds. The player in-bounding the ball cannot play it untill another player has touched the ball.

In-bounding the ball
On all out bound plays all players must be 5 yds. from the player in-bounding the ball.

Player Priveleges
Aerial ball
A ball raised in the air by one or both feet. An aerial ball that has been caught may be held, passed or punted.

Ground Ball

A ground ball is stationary, rolling, or bouncing a ground ball must be kicked, headed or bounced off the body.

Dribble
A player may dribble the ball with his/her feet.
A player may bat or tip an aerial ball or drop a caught ball to the ground and play it as a punt or dribble.

Kick Up
A player kicking the ball into the air is eligible to catch it before it hits the ground.

Goalkeeper
There is no distinction between the goalkeeper and the other players.

Carrying the Ball
A player when catching the ball from a kick or pass may take one step in any direction from the point at which s/he caught the ball. A player moving when catching the ball may use 2 steps to come to a stop or get rid of the ball. Violations of this rule are called carrying the ball. A player who is called for carrying leaves the ball where the violation was called. The nearest member of the other may play the ball as a punt or a pass. A player may not hold the ball for more than 5 sec.

The Ball
When the ball is held by 2 opposing players a toss-up is called (jump-ball).
Jumpers take positions in an imaginary 4ft. circle. All other players must remain 6ft. away.

Freshman PE 1 Tennis Rules

Information from.....
http://library.thinkquest.org/10615/frames/index.html

KNOW YOUR RULES The rules of tennis are not very complicated but they are very detailed, so what you need is a feeling for the general rules of the game. If you want to study all the official rules, call your state tennis association for a copy of the book. For now, let's keep it simple.

Who Plays Whom?In singles, two people play, one on each end of the court. In doubles, two players at one end play against two players at the other end.To start a match, the players will toss a coin or spin a racquet to decide one of four things:
· the player winning the toss can choose to serve
· the player can choose to receive serve
· the player can choose which end to play from in the first game
· the player can give up the choice and make the opponent choose first (but you won't see this happen very often).Note that a player can't pick two things: you can't choose to serve and choose the end you will start.

THE AIM OF THE GAME There are only two principles in tennis. All of the rules are just details to support these two principles.
Principle One:You must get the ball over the net.
Principle Two:The ball must land in the court on your opponent's side of the net.

If you always do these two things, guess what? It is almost impossible to lose! All you have to do is get the ball over the net and into the court one more time than your opponent, and you're practically unbeatable. Sounds simple enough, doesn't it?

SERVING THE BALL To start the game, one player (the server) stands behind the baseline, just to the right of the centre service mark (no standing on the line-that's called a foot fault.) The server hits the ball across the net into the service court on the opposite side of the centre service line. If the first serve doesn't land in the service court, it's a fault and the player gets one more chance. If this second serve is also a fault, the server loses the point (a double fault). If either of those two serves is "good" (lands in the correct service court) the receiver has to hit the ball back over the net.

If the ball touches the net when it is served but still bounces into the correct service court, a let is called and the server gets to try that serve again. If the ball hits the net and then lands outside the correct service court, the serve is a fault.

PLAYING THE POINT Play continues until one player hits the ball into the net or outside their opponent's court, or until one player hits a shot so well that the opponent can't reach it. (This is called 'hitting a winner")

After each point in singles, the server and receiver change sides (not ends-just left to right or right to left). In doubles, the server changes sides but the receivers stay where they are and receive alternate points.

After the serve, all balls must land on or inside the baseline. They must also land on or inside the singles sideline (in singles) or the doubles sidelines (in doubles). You can hit the ball after one bounce or before it bounces (except on a return of serve, when you have to let it bounce). You must hit it before it bounces twice. Just be sure you don't reach over the net before the ball crosses onto your side-if you do, you lose the point.

KEEPING SCORE It sounds weird but it's really very simple. Scoring in tennis starts at zero (love). The first point is 15, the second 30, then 40, then game. So, if you've won two points and your opponent has won one, the score is 30-15 if you are serving, 15-30 if you are receiving (the server's score is always called first). If the score goes to 40-40(40-all), it's called deuce. From deuce, one player must win two points in a row to win the game. The player who wins the first point after deuce is said to have the ad (advantage). The score will be called as "advantage server" (ad in) or "advantage receiver" (ad out). If the player with the ad loses the next point, the score goes back to deuce, but if the player with the ad wins the ad point, game is scored.

Players change ends of the court whenever the total of the games played is an odd number (1-0, 4-3, 5-2, 1-4, for example). A set of tennis is won when one player reaches 6 games with a lead of at least 2 games. From a game score of 5-5, a player can win the set by a score of 7-5

The Tiebreak If the score goes to 6-6, a tiebreak is usually played: The aim here is to win 7 points with a lead of at least 2 points. (If the score gets to 7-6 or 7-5, the tiebreak keeps going until one player is 2 point ahead 12-10, for example.) The player who does that wins the tiebreak and the set with a game score of 7-6.

Most matches are best of three sets, so the player winning two sets wins the match.

Those are the very basic rules but I strongly suggest that you get a copy of the booklet The Official Rules of Tennis and read it carefully. You'll earn a lot of respect from other players if they see that you know the rules-and play by them.

DID YOU KNOW?The word love in tennis is said to come from the French 1'oeuf (the egg) because that's what a zero looks like on the scoreboard. The scores 15, 30 and 40 are from the old game of Real Tennis.

Check out this website for court info!
http://www.hickoksports.com/images/tenniscourt.gif

Junior/Senior Elective Badminton Rules

Badminton Rules
Junior/Senior Elective

I. Playing the Court
The playing court for doubles is the entire court (outside lines 44 by 20 feet); while for singles it is the same length (44 ft) but only 17 feet wide. The service court for doubles is short and wide while the singles service court is longer than the doubles service court, but narrower.

II. Court Markings

Check here for court markings
http://www.badminton-information.com/badminton-court.html

III. Net
The net is 5 feet in height.

IV. Racket
Badminton rackets are light and fragile, and require the best of care. The best rackets are made of laminated wood, and some of them have a steel shaft. The more laminations there are, the better the racket. Steel, aluminum, and plastic rackets are available, but have not proved as satisfactory as the wooden ones. The best rackets are strung with lamb gut, which is usually too expensive for the average player. Most rackets are strung with nylon strings.

V. Shuttlecock or Birdie
High competition shuttlecocks weight approximately one-sixth of an ounce and consist of a leather-covered cork base in which feathers are inserted at regular intervals and held in place with glue and string. This quality of shuttlecock is expensive—primarily because of the difficulty in obtaining good feathers, the best of which come from Czechoslovakia. The nylon and plastic shuttlecocks have proved quite satisfactory and are recommended for recreational use.

VI. Games/Match Play
A. Match: best of 3 games to 15 points
Game: played to 15 points. Server can choose to set a game: If score is 13 all, server can set the game to 18 points (or 5 additional points). If the score is 14 all, the server can set the game to 17 points (or 3 additional points). You do not need to win by 2 points. Setting the game allows the receiver more opportunities to get the serve back and get into the game. You may only set the game once during a game.

B. Choice of Service and Courts
1. The winner of the spin of racket has the choice of serving or defending a particular side.
2. The loser of the spin has a choice of the remaining options.
3. Players change courts at the end of a game and the winner serves first. In doubles, either of the two winners may serve first and either of the two losers may receive first.
4. If a third game is necessary to determine the winner of a match, the players shall change courts when the leading score reaches 8 in a game of 15.

C. Serving Box
Serve from the right service box when your score is even and left service box when your score is odd.

D. Faults and Errors
The following violations lead to a service opportunity for the receiving team if the foul is made by the serving team and a point is given to the serving team if the foul is made by the receiving team.

1. If the service is made higher than the waist.
2. If the service falls out of the court diagonally opposite.
3. If the server or receiver steps out of his/her court.
4. If during service, the server balks.
5. If during the service or play the shuttlecock falls outside the designated boundaries, goes through or under the net, fails to pass over the net, touches the roof or sidewalls, or touches the person or clothing of a player.
6. If the shuttlecock, in play, is hit before it crosses the net.
7. If, during play, a player touches the net or its support with his/her racket, person, or clothing.
8. If the shuttlecock is hit twice in succession, either by the same person, or players on the same side.
9. If the shuttlecock is momentarily held on the racket and not distinctly hit.
10. If in service the server or receiver fails to remain in his/her respective court and fails to keep some part of both feet in contact with the floor until the service is delivered.

E. General Rules
1. One trial only is allowed on the service unless the shuttle is missed entirely
2. A “let” is when a serve or point is replayed
3. It is a “let” if a player serves out of turn or from the wrong court and it is caught by the other team. Despite if a point was awarded or not, the point must be replayed.

F. Doubles Serving/Receiving
1. Before starting a match, both teams should determine who is to serve and receive first in each inning. (Choose a server A, server B, receiver A, and receiver B).
2. As with singles, a team serves from the right side when their score is even and the left side when their score is odd.
3. During the top half of the first inning, only one server is given the opportunity to serve. S/he continues to serve until the serving team commits a fault or error.
4. After a point is scored, the server moves to perform the next serve from the opposite box. The receiver should be the player who did not receive the last serve.
5. From the bottom of the first inning on, two servers are given the opportunity to serve. This means that when a fault or error occurs to the serving team, the other partner is given the opportunity to serve from the box the first server last served. The receiver should be the player who did not receive the last serve.

Skill Cues :
The Serve
*Long serve—Stand along center line, about 4-5 feet from short service line.

*Forehand—similar to throwing a ball.
*Backhand—compared to popping a towel at the ceiling.
